13th Annual Scholar Showcase

Aiken, SC (04/25/2022) — The 13th annual Scholar Showcase at the University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken) was held on Friday, April 15. The daylong celebration of student scholarly activities hosted by the USC Aiken Center for Research Excellence is designed to provide a forum for undergraduate students from all areas of study to display and discuss their work with other students, the faculty, and guests. This year, Scholar Showcase featured morning and afternoon poster sessions and an Honors Symposium during which honor graduates presented their capstone projects.

Dr. William Jackson, co-director of the Center for Research Excellence, stated, "Scholar Showcase is an exciting day for both students and faculty and represents the culmination of projects, each of which is faculty-mentored, that often span multiple semesters and some of which are ongoing. It is a wonderful day for our students, faculty, and university. Scholar Showcase continues to grow - this year, we had 160 undergraduate participants who gave 94 poster and 13 oral Honors Capstone presentations, representing our largest event to date."

The poster session was held in USC Aiken's Student Activity Center gymnasium. Students from across the campus presented more than 90 displays of student research. They included various topics such as "Authenticity, Psychological Needs, and Self-Esteem," "Post War Japan's Economic Boom," "Interventions to Improve Glycemic Control," and "Feedbacks for Reinforcement Learning in Robotics."

The Honors Symposium, held concurrently with the afternoon poster session featured 13 honor graduates who gave oral presentations of their capstone projects. Like the poster session, the Honors Symposium consisted of students from across the campus who presented on a wide variety of topics, including "Violent Video Game Play and College Student Aggression," "The Effects of Race, Age and Location: Comparing the 1918 and 1957 Influenza Pandemics," and "Hijacking Advancements in Gaming for Cybersecurity."
