Civil Rights Leader to Share Historical Insight

Aiken, SC (02/11/2020) — The University of South Carolina Aiken has invited James Gallman, a champion of civil rights throughout the state and a leader in the NAACP, to share his insights, Feb. 17, from 5-6 p.m., in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, room 116.

This event is free and open to the public.

"I believe Mr. Gallman embodies the concept of organized assembly and debate given his 40 plus-year experience with the NAACP," said Dalton Anderson, president of the USC Aiken History Club which is sponsoring the event.

Gallman, an Aiken native, graduated from Martha Schofield High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from Claflin University and a Master of Mathematics from the University of Tennessee.

Throughout his professional career, he has made an impact in the lives of youth. Gallman has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent for Aiken County Public Schools. He also served for seven years as the director for Aiken/Barnwell Regional Head Start Program.

He has been active in numerous civic and social organizations as well. Gallman has served as president of the Aiken County Branch of the NAACP, the president of the South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, and is currently a member of the National Board of the NAACP. He is the former chairman of the South Carolina Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. He is also the chairman of the Aiken/Barnwell Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, and the current chairman of the Aiken/Barnwell Community Action Agency, Inc.

Gallman is active in his church where he served as treasurer, chairman of the Trustee Board and assistant superintendent of Sunday school at Friendship Baptist Church. He currently holds membership in the Ambassadors Club of Aiken, the Royal Aikenites, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

"Civil Rights, Civil Discourse, & Robert's Rules Of Order: James Gallman Reflects on 50 Years of Activism" takes place Feb. 17, from 5 - 6 p.m., in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, room 116. The event is free and open to the public.
