Community Concert to Benefit USC Aiken Scholarship Program

Aiken, SC (02/05/2019) — The annual South Boundary Singers Scholarship Concert on Feb. 10, at 4 p.m., in the Etherredge Center Lobby Gallery, will feature University of South Carolina Aiken students, faculty and alumni, performing with members of the community. While the concert is free and open to the public, goodwill donations will be accepted for student scholarships.

"Since its founding in 2007, the South Boundary Singers has been contributing to an endowed scholarship fund at USC Aiken," said Tom Rupsis, president of the group's board.

"This scholarship is awarded yearly to a male student who is pursuing a degree in vocal performance or music education."

"Please consider attending and help us support our future musicians," he added.

South Boundary Singers was founded by USC Aiken alumnus, Bill Riehl, who earned a music degree from the university, more than a decade ago. He wanted to establish a male vocal group and worked closely with the faculty at USC Aiken who suggested students as original members.

"The partnership between South Boundary and choral studies at USC Aiken remains integral to our long-term success," said Dr. Joel Scraper, chair of the department of visual and performing arts at USC Aiken.

"It is my pleasure to honor Bill Riehl's vision to create an endowment that provides $1000 annually to support a male student pursuing music and with an interest in conducting."

Corey Grant, a freshman majoring in music education, received this year's scholarship. He will be among the artists performing during Sunday's concert. His solo is part of the program that features South Boundary Singers and USC Aiken's choir, known as Vox Femina.

"We are also glad to showcase our applied guitar faculty member, Steve Sloan, who recently released a CD of solo acoustic guitar music. Steve will play with the ensemble and two solo selections," Scraper said.

In addition to the choirs performing multiple selections, several other scholarship recipients are also part of the performance, which directly supports university students.

"We cannot achieve our collective goal without your support. On behalf of the students involved - past, present, and future - thank you, Scraper said.
