USC Aiken
Day of Engaging, Dynamic Science Activities Slated for Oct. 5
Aiken, SC (09/25/2019) — The University of South Carolina Aiken hosts the 34th annual S.E.E.D, or Science Education Enrichment Day, Oct. 5, at the University of South Carolina Aiken, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
Media representatives interested in covering SEED are encouraged to e-mail: news@usca.edu .
"Imagine getting up close with honeybees, talking turkey, cooking in a solar oven, making an edible earth, driving a championship robot, making paper, or virtually traveling through outer space," said John Hutchens, director of special programs at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center.
He claims guests will be able to do just that during S.E.E.D.
As part of the free event, attendees will celebrate innovations in STEM, or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. S.E.E.D goers will roam the university's campus, visiting the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and other sites at USC Aiken. Student groups, regional corporations, museums, professional organizations, government agencies, educators, and national labs join forces to present engaging hands-on activities for guests of all ages.
"With the goal of increasing awareness of the role of science, technology engineering and mathematics in society and conveying the joy of STEM, we plan this event each year to give young learners 'up close and personal' interaction with real-world scientists, engineers and other technical professionals," said Hutchens,
"S.E.E.D. organizers recognize that as a society we must continue to excite and engage families about STEM fields."
The theme for this year's event "Explore, Discover, Imagine" was selected because organizers hope to increase the natural curiosity of children to help promote the critical role of science and other STEM career fields.
Highlights of the 34th Annual S.E.E.D. include:
- More than 65 hands-on exhibits, activities and stage performances;
- Meet the cast of the action and adventure reality series, Scaly Adventures;
- Exhibitors include the National Wild Turkey Federation, Columbia Marionette Theatre, American Nuclear Society, S.C. State Museum, Savannah Riverkeeper, Kimberly-Clark, USC Aiken, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the Astronomy Club of Augusta and many more;
