Elementary-School Artists Display Work at USC Aiken

Story updated June 12, 2018

Aiken, SC (06/12/2018) — East Aiken School of the Arts opened its six-month rotating art show, which is currently displayed at the University of South Carolina Aiken's Student Activities Center, near Starbucks.

"The university is pleased host some of the finest artwork from elementary school children in our county," said Christian Medders, assistant director of student life at USC Aiken.

"These original pieces help beautify our [student activities center] and are displayed prominently in one of the busiest areas on our campus, making it easy for the public to view."

East Aiken School of the Arts' visual arts teacher, Tamara Smith, who is wrapping up her first year on campus, came up with the idea to partner with USC Aiken in this unique way. She and other members of the school selected the artwork of several standout student artists in K-5th grade. Art pieces were selected based on a detailed project rubric and the individual artisanship of the students themselves.

"We are very excited for our students to have the opportunity to have their artwork be displayed so prominently at USC Aiken," Smith said.

"This is a huge accomplishment that will allow our students to experience a college campus and also help them build the foundation for their visual art portfolio. We absolutely love showing off our students' work in the community, and we are grateful for this partnership with USC Aiken."

Although this was her inaugural year at East Aiken School of the Arts, Smith owned a local art business and taught adult and young students privately in the area for many years.

Medders says he hopes this art exhibit will become a tradition between the university and the school district.
