Employees of the Year Named

Aiken, SC (06/04/2020) — The University of South Carolina Aiken announced its Classified Employees of the Year. The 2019 honor goes to three staff members who are committed to the mission of the university and the success of students.

Kerri Charles has been a member of the UofSC Aiken team for the last seven years. For the last two, she has served as the administrative assistant to the dean and faculty in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Those who nominated her lauded Charles for her knowledge of university policies and procedures, her cost-saving efforts, and her positive and professional manner.

"All of her work is of high quality, and she has the interests of the entire university at heart," said one nominator.

"She possesses the ability to creatively solve problems and complete tasks, finds ways to help others, and never complains about extra workload.

"She has a desire to help the university maintain its status as an excellent institution and will go above and beyond to help with our mission and convey our values. She values the input of everyone around her and truly enjoys helping students, faculty, the administration and community members."

Sharon Knight has worked in the admissions office for 10 years. She is recognized as a leader on the team and is often consulted for her expertise, which is "clearly recognized" by fellow staff members. As a program assistant, she often trains new hires and mentors peers and student employees alike.

"She can be counted on to think through questions that she is posed, and her thoughtful and detail-orientated counsel is appreciated," said her nominator.

"Sharon is a tremendously hard worker who takes a great deal of pride in her work and in making sure things are done correctly and promptly. She demands the same of those around her and isn't afraid to let us know.

"Because her work is exclusively behind the scenes, not many on campus see or recognize it. She is without a doubt critical to the mission of the office of admissions."

Kathy Ritchie, the transfer coordinator for the university, also garnered Employee of the Year recognition. She's been a longstanding member of the admissions team, but most recently she took on the added responsibility of being the transfer coordinator for RN-to-BSN students.

"She took on this additional responsibility at a time when this program was beginning to significantly grow," wrote her nominator.

"She responded to the request to take on this work very positively, affirming that was her job.

"Kathy demonstrates leadership qualities in the way she provides customer service to our applicants and to the School of Nursing. She manages her increased workload well, is extremely organized, communicates effectively, is accountable for her decisions, is positive with her interactions with students and the School of Nursing, and has been a very influential person in the growth of our program."

The pool of nominees for this year's Staff Employee of the Year honor was quite competitive, according to the chair of the UofSC Aiken Staff Assembly.

"Congratulations to those selected," said Carmen Williams, who leads the staff assembly.

"We are grateful for the unwavering commitment of these dedicated individuals who constantly put the mission of the institution and the success of our students at the center of all they do."
