Pacer Baseball Legend Inducted into SC Athletic Hall of Fame

Aiken, SC (05/14/2019) — The South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame inducted Roberto Hernandez, former Pacer baseball player, into the prestigious organization during its 59th annual induction ceremony and banquet.

Jim Herlihy, University of South Carolina Aiken's current athletic director, and his predecessor, Randy Warrick, were on hand for the celebration of Hernandez and his accomplishments.

After pitching for USC Aiken, Hernandez spent 17 years in the major leagues, playing for several MLB teams. As a Pacer, he hit 19 home runs and led USC Aiken to a spot in the NAIA College World Series. He was named an NAIA All-American, All-World Series Team members and the NAIA Area 7 Player of the Year in 1986.

The jersey Hernandez wore while playing for USC Aiken was retired in 2001. The university opened the Roberto Hernandez Baseball Stadium on campus in 2003 and inducted him into the USC Aiken Hall of Fame in 2007.
