Pacers Pack Loads of Food for Local Students

Aiken, SC (12/02/2019) — Students from the University of South Carolina Aiken delivered 160 backpacks full of food to students at North Aiken Elementary School.

The effort was part of the university's annual One Table event. When they gather for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, faculty, staff and students donate food and backpacks, which are later delivered to a local school.

"We are proud to partner with the Aiken County Public School District to help ensure these students have food to eat throughout their Thanksgiving break," said Christian Medders, one of the organizers of the backpack and food drive.

"Unfortunately, some of our very own neighbors have children who don't have nutritious meals available at home.

"These backpacks are filled with easy-to-fix items for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which will last several days."

Medders said that snacks are also part of the array of foods stuffed in each backpack.

"It's tremendously rewarding to hear how excited these students are to get a brand new backpack and a load of food they can enjoy and fix themselves."

During the delivery of the backpacks, Pacers also took time to get to know the students at North Aiken, playing games and reading books.
