Scientist, University Affiliate Recognized

Aiken, SC (07/09/2019) — One of the University of South Carolina Aiken's donors and new university affiliates, Dr. Carol Jantzen, is featured in the current edition of the Materials Research Society' MRS Bulletin, which is published monthly.

The article highlights the support of Jantzen, a retired scientist from the Savannah River National Laboratory who now spends her time sharing her insight, experiences and expertise with Pacers and visitors to the Ruth Patrick Science Education. Her gifts of 1,000 minerals and other unique gifts helped USC Aiken create the Fredericks Mineral Gallery, named after Jantzen's father who cultivated her passion for minerals at a very young age.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Jantzen on campus," said Dr. Chad Leverette, interim dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering.

"Our students have a more enriching educational experience by interacting with and learning from this leader in her field. She is a longstanding supporter of USC Aiken."

Jantzen has been a member of the MRS for more than 40 years. According to its website, Materials Research Society aims to "build a dynamic, interactive, global community of materials researchers to advance technical excellence by providing a framework in which the materials disciplines can convene, collaborate, integrate and advocate." The MRS is made of more than 14,000 materials science researchers, engineers, and students, according to the society's website.
