Students Celebrate Suffragettes

Aiken, SC (09/02/2020) — The University of South Carolina Aiken Student-Athlete Advisory Council teamed up with a generous donor to provide student-athletes t-shirts commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

In August 1920, Congress ratified the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing American women the right to vote. In honor of the historic milestone, members of the university community commemorated this landmark moment in U.S. history - and those involved in the effort - by wearing purple on Aug. 26.

The university has a longstanding tie to Eulalie Salley, a former first lady of Aiken and a local Suffragette. Salley championed the cause and was on hand when the South Carolina legislature signed it into law.

"Her tireless efforts provide half the population with this important civil right," said Dr. Sandra Jordan, chancellor.
