USC Aiken Faculty Receive Columbia's Signature Grant
Aiken, SC (06/10/2019) — Several professors at the University of South Carolina Aiken received ASPIRE grants from the USC Office of the Vice President for Research in Columbia.
"The selected projects from our outstanding faculty represent a wide variety of subject areas, from art to engineering, helping us to fund important scholarship across disciplines and boosting research throughout the UofSC system," said USC Vice President for Research, Prakash Nagarkatti.
Of the 188 proposals submitted for consideration, only 82 were selected for funding, including eight faculty members from USC Aiken.
ASPIRE I Grants were awarded to:
- Dr. Douglas White (Chemistry and Physics): "Laboratory Studies of Outer Planetary Ice Analogs Subject to Thermal Processing"
- Dr. Nicholas Marshall (Chemistry and Physics) "Mechanism and Scope of Conjugated Polymer/Metal-Organic Framework Composite Formation"
- Dr. Jessica Sullivan (Biology and Geology): "Topographic Controls on Flow and Sedimentation in a Small Salt Marsh Island"
- Dr. Douglas Higbee (English): "The USC Aiken Student-Veteran Oral History Project"
An ASPIRE III Grant was awarded to:
- Dr. Virginia Shervette, Dr. April DeLaurier, Dr. Michelle Vieyra, Dr. Mary Mills (Biology/Geology): Establishment of a Shared USCA Histological Research Facility"
ASPIRE is the "signature competitive internal grant program of the Office of the Vice President for Research." It is considered "a cornerstone of faculty research and scholarship at the University of South Carolina," according to those who oversee the program.
"Through ASPIRE, the office funds promising faculty research, shared infrastructure and cross-disciplinary research projects to help strengthen UofSC researchers' competitiveness for external grants and increase scholarly activity throughout the UofSC system."
