USC Aiken Faculty Tour Savannah River Site

Aiken, SC (05/31/2019) — The Savannah River Site recently hosted faculty members from the University of South Carolina Aiken who toured facilities and explored opportunities for mutually beneficial future partnerships.

"There are so many great opportunities for us and our students to partner with SRS going forward," said Dr. Chad Leverette, interim dean of the USC Aiken College of Sciences and Engineering.

"With the new perspective provided by the tour, we have already had follow-up conversations with SRS staff on growing our partnership."

USC Aiken's colleagues from the Salkehatchie campus accompanied the Pacers.

During the driving portion of the tour, visitors viewed:

M Area: Clean-Up and Closure

F Area: F-Canyon/F Tank Farm

E Area: Low-level Waste Disposal Facilities

J Area: Salt Waste Processing Facility

Z Area: Saltstone Facility

The tour also featured stops in the Savannah River National Laboratory. There, the guests in higher education observed virtual reality equipment, robotics, and additive manufacturing; received an overview of physical protection systems engineering; and toured the Tritium Extraction Facility.

"We are so thankful for the opportunity to have such an in-depth tour of SRS," Leverette said.

"With our colleagues from USC Salkehatchie, the USC Aiken faculty hoped to learn more about the operations and needs of [Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the Savannah River National Laboratory, and Savannah River Remediation]."
