USC Aiken Hosts Ragtime Composer, Pianist

Aiken, SC (02/15/2019) — Premier ragtime artist, Scott Kirby, will perform in the University of South Carolina Aiken Etherredge Center for the Visual and Performing Arts on Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., in room 125. The concert is free and open to the public.

"Critics call [Scott Kirby] one of the best interpreters of ragtime music on the scene today," said Charles Osgood in one broadcast of CBS News Sunday Morning.

Kirby will perform on the university's newly refurbished Steinway, presented to the Etherredge Center more than 30 years ago by the Penland family. In addition to ragtime, Kirby's performances provide audience members a tour of the world, with pieces that include Brazilian tango, blues, Creole, traditional jazz, and his original compositions.

"Scott Kirby's program will help enable students and others to gain an understanding of the rich heritage and contributions of African-American musicians and composers who helped shape and develop American music," said Dr. Mark Hollingsworth, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
