USC Aiken Literacy Prof Donates Books to Area Teens
Aiken, SC (12/18/2018) — In an effort to foster reading and raise social awareness among high school students, one University of South Carolina Aiken conducted a campus-wide book drive.
Dr. LeNessa Clark, assistant professor of literacy education, "adopted" a local 11th-grade English class and asked her colleagues to help provide 52 copies of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas to the students.
"[This book] is a critical piece for adolescent readers to discuss and reflect on the happenings in America today," Clark said. "I am very passionate about this text and am looking for ways to support the efforts to expose students to this work of literature."
Clark chose this particular piece of young adult literature because it "allows students to suss out a world of social injustice and police brutality." She adds that the main character is relatable, as she struggles to figure out her place in the world, while dealing with the untimely death of her childhood friend that was murdered by a police officer.
The USC Aiken professor says she was moved to conduct the book drive when, as she was observing a USC Aiken education major who was working in a local classroom, she happened to hear a teacher express a need for them.
"I clearly recall pouring my own money back into my classroom to create unique and engaging experiences for my students, so I reacted and made it my personal mission to be of service," said Clark.
"I am excited for the teacher and students to read the text and have great and reflective conversations, which hopefully prompt peaceful action."
Between USC Aiken faculty and staff, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Clark gathered more than 70 books.
"I am so thankful to everyone who rallied to help support this effort," Clark said.
"It's great to be a Pacer."
In addition to helping purchase copies of The Hate U Give, Clark asked each donor to write a sentiment of well wishes or an inspirational message, encouraging readers to keep reading.
