Walmart Helps Fund Super Smart Girl's Classes at USC Aiken

Aiken, SC (09/04/2019) — Last month, Walmart teamed up with a local non-profit organization aimed at ensuring the success of young women.

Super Smart Girl's Club is an Aiken-based 501c3 nonprofit literacy-based program founded by Latina McIntyre. The organization recently received a Walmart Giving Grant, which will be used to fund a couple of programs, including a scholarship to the University of South Carolina Aiken. Specifically, part of the $2,000 grant will fund the Super Smart Girl's Club Dual Enrollment Scholarship at USC Aiken.

"We are thankful for Walmart's support, and we are delighted to have a partnership with USC Aiken," McIntyre said.

"We are so grateful for this grant which will help young ladies develop effective skills in leadership skills, academic skills and social skills."

Jada Mosley, a senior at Aiken High School who is currently taking classes at USC Aiken, earned the inaugural dual-enrollment scholarship. She plans to major in sports medicine or physical therapy.

"The University of South Carolina Aiken is excited to have Jada as one of our dual-enrolled students at the university," said Mary Driscoll, vice chancellor for advancement and external affairs at USC Aiken.

"Jada will be the first student from Aiken County's Super Smart Girl's Club, and we hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with Latina McIntyre, president of the Super Smart Girl's program."

In addition, to the USC Aiken scholarship, the Walmart Giving Grant will fund the 2020 Super Smart Girl College Scholarship. The grant will also help underwrite Super Smart Girl's Club's literacy tutoring and the organization's Flowers of Love program, which provides continuity of care to the elderly in area nursing homes.

"Super Smart Girl's Club is designed to mentor young girls through stimulated community service events and educational programs designed to enhance teamwork, leadership skills and life skills," McIntyre said.

She adds that the Super Smart Girl's Club will continue to empower young ladies to find their passion and enhance their skills to be successful and effective leaders within the community.
