Youth Art Competition Focuses on STEAM, Celebrates Science Education at Ruth Patrick

Aiken, SC (08/17/2018) — As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center is calling for entries for a STEAM Youth Art Competition and Exhibit.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics - or STEAM -- competition is open to all K-12 public, private, and home schooled students in the CSRA. The deadline for entries is September 14.

"The purpose of the STEAM Art contest is to inspire students to tap into their inner artist and offer a powerful way to connect with and understand STEM fields, which include science, technology, engineering and math," said John Hutchens, director of special programs at Ruth Patrick Science Education Center.

"The STEAM concept continues to gain momentum as educators embrace artistic creativity as a fundamental form of expression that supports the development of 21st century skills.

"By engaging in STEAM artistic experiences, students must understand both function and form in design."

All entries must be original, hand-produced artwork with a STEAM focus. Any media may be used, including crayons, markers, pen and ink, colored pencils, paint, pastels, glue, glitter, collage, sand, yarn and other materials that create texture.

Entries will be judged based on originality and artistic merit by a jury selected by the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center. Prizes will be awarded in four divisions: Grades K- 2; Grades 3-5; Grades 6-8; and Grades 9-12. Each division will have a Best of Show category in addition to first, second and third place winners.

All entries will be displayed throughout the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and DuPont Planetarium Sept. 27 - Oct. 13, 2018. The exhibit will be officially unveiled on Thursday, Sept. 27, during the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center's 30th Anniversary celebration. Winners will be announced at the 33rd Annual S.E.E.D. -- Science Education Enrichment Day - at RPSEC on Saturday, Oct. 6.
