Aiken, SC (12/10/2018) — The University of South Carolina Aiken hosted its annual Holiday Fest, celebrating festivities from around the globe and among different faith groups this time of year.
In addition to crafts, seasonal snacks and a visit from Santa, highlights included craft tables and foods representing several countries, including Costa Rica, China, India, Germany, the United States, and Ghana. During the event, diversity peer educators shared cultural insights from around the globe.
"Diversity peer educators are students who serve as an extension of the Office of Student Life - Diversity Initiatives," said Taifha Natalee Alexander, assistant director of student life for diversity initiatives.
"They are instrumental in creating, facilitating and executing events on campus that increase diversity, inclusion and belonging among students, faculty and staff."
Several diversity peer educators explained to their fellow Pacers the importance and traditions associated with different countries' holidays.
"Holiday Fest is important because we are so used to how we 'normally' celebrate Christmas in the United States that we do not see other countries traditions," said Jenesis Garcia, a diversity peer educator.
"After witnessing the other traditions, I want to incorporate some of those into my Christmas."
The celebration of the season also offers students a break from the pre-exam crunch.
