Biology Major Selected as Rotary's Student of the Month

Aiken, SC (10/12/2020) — A student-leader at the University of South Carolina Aiken has been recognized by the Sunrise Rotary Club as the Student of the Month of September.

Katlyn Johnson, a junior majoring in biology, plans to become an OB/GYN or perinatologist. Ultimately, she'd like to own and operate an all-woman birthing center.

Before she does, though, she's staying busy with a plethora of student organizations and initiatives at UofSC Aiken. While this keeps her schedule quite full, she says she wouldn't have it any other way.

"I transferred to UofSC Aiken to earn a better educational experience as well as to get more involved on campus," the Grovetown High School graduate said.

Getting involved - in and out of the classroom and on and off campus -- is just what Johnson has done since first stepping into the Student Activities Center at UofSC Aiken.

She's a member of TriBeta, the biology honor society, and currently serves as the vice president of the UofSC Aiken Student Government Association. Additionally, Johnson is a member of CURLS and the Black Student Union. She's committed to ensuring the success of fellow Pacers and volunteered to be one of the university's first PEAK mentors.

Off campus, Johnson stays busy too.

In the past, she's taken on several jobs, including positions at Perry's Landing, Windsor Store, or at Augusta University. Yet, that's not all. Johnson often volunteers in the community, finds time to play tennis, gets outside with her dogs or pursues her passion of interior design.
