New Pacer LIFE Program to Begin Fall of 2023 at USC Aiken

Aiken, SC (08/24/2022) — The University of South Carolina Aiken School of Education has developed the new Pacer LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) program for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). The hybrid program, which was approved by the USC Board of Trustees at their June meeting, will allow these individuals to attend a two-year residential program on the university campus.

"The quality of life for an adult with ID is often influenced by employment and independent living opportunities," said program director Melissa Martin. "Unfortunately, even with recent advancements in programs, initiatives, and awareness, these individuals often have difficulty securing their own homes and earning above the poverty line."

This difficulty causes significant concern to the parents of such individuals who worry about what will happen to their dependent children once they are gone.

USC Aiken's School of Education developed a hybrid model that focuses on the whole person instead of just a potential employee. Students will practice an active and healthy lifestyle that encourages social engagement to foster a sense of belonging to a community. The coursework focuses on functional academics like reading and math, oriented around practical application to tasks like maintaining a budget, balancing a checkbook or reading a new recipe for baking an entree.

Recruitment of prospective students relies on collaboration between the university and local school districts. The program will partner with district special education coordinators to distribute program information to families, teachers and district personnel.

The Pacer LIFE program will be tuition-based and has also received seed money from generous donors such as Dr. Liz Stewart, the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute (GRI), and the Aiken Partnership Board.

"I can think of no better community investment than one which gives young people the chance to broaden their experiences. The opportunities this program provides will enable them to be thriving, contributing members of our community and will provide them an independent and secure future," Stewart shared. "It is a privilege to be able to support this initiative."

Graduates will receive an official employment credential developed with and recognized by local businesses, the City of Aiken, and the Chamber of Commerce. This credential will give students an entrance into the local job market and a certification that allows for broader work opportunities-at a better pay rate.

Dr. Dennis Skelley, President/CEO of GRI shared, "The Pacer Life Program aligns with one of our mission goals of providing pathways to gainful employment for persons with disabilities. Combining a true college campus experience while completing course work in independent living skills and academic job skill requirements will enhance maturity and success with the individual and for employers within the local community. Truly a special program providing a level of pride for enrolled students that they will always remember and cherish."
