Scholars Take Part in Annual Summer Research Program
Aiken, SC (08/25/2020) — The University of South Carolina Aiken's annual Summer Scholars Institute boasted the largest cohort in the history of the program.
The 2020 SSI included 45 participants, made up of 25 UofSC Aiken Students; 13 UofSC Aiken faculty; and seven high school students, some representing Aiken Scholars Academy, SC Governor's School for Science and Mathematics and Aiken County Public High Schools.
"We are extremely proud of this growing research initiative and are pleased to make opportunities available to high school students as well," said Dr. Chad Leverette, dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering.
"Generous partners make these unique research initiatives at UofSC Aiken possible."
The annual Summer Scholars Institute is underwritten in part from grants provided by WORC, ADP and SC INBRE. The Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers, or WORC program, is a STEM initiative through the Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization funded by the Department of Energy Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration. In addition to research grants, WORC provides a number of scholarships to qualifying Pacers. Automatic Data Processing, Inc., or ADP, is a global technology company that provides human capital management solutions. The company has long been a supporter of the university's educational programs and initiatives. Funded by the National Institutes of Health National Institute of General Medical Science, the South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence, or SC INBRE, aims to expand biomedical research across the Palmetto State.
"Throughout the the summer, undergraduate and high school students worked with UofSC Aiken faculty conducting engaging research, including relevant biomedical research," Leverette said.
