SRSCRO Defrays USC Aiken Students' College Costs, Develops Future Workforce
Aiken, SC (01/15/2019) — The Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization awards numerous scholarships to University of South Carolina Aiken students, providing on average approximately $3,000 to each student.
"We are extremely grateful for the generous investment in our students and the developing workforce in our area," said Dr. Chad Leverette, interim dean of the USC Aiken College of Sciences and Engineering.
These STEM-related scholarships are part of SRSCRO's WORC program, or Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers. According to its charter, SRSCRO anticipates that 50 percent of the Savannah River Site workforce will retire during the next few years. The organization wants to help develop the next generation.
"Any USC Aiken full-time student who is a sophomore, junior, or senior and who is currently enrolled in biology, with a concentration in environmental remediation and restoration; industrial process engineering; chemistry; mathematics or computer science can apply," Leverette said.
The South Carolina Higher Education Study Committee realizes that during the years 2013-2030, there will be approximately 553,884 new jobs created in South Carolina and that 52 percent of these jobs will require a higher education. These facts are outlined in the Competing Through Knowledge report released by the Darla Moore School of Business, 2013.
