The Intersection Ribbon Cutting
USC Aiken announces opening of campus space dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Aiken, SC (04/07/2022) — The Department of Diversity Initiatives at the University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken) has announced the opening of a new space on campus dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The space is called The Intersection and is located behind the Starbucks in the Student Activity Center. A ceremonial ribbon cutting for the Intersection is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 at 12 p.m.
The name "The Intersection" is academically rooted in the term intersectionality coined by Kimberle' Crenshaw. According to Crenshaw's definition, intersectionality is an analytical framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege.
Dr. Jamel Hodges, director of Diversity Initiatives, said that this designated space will help further the university's mission in the area of diversity. "USC Aiken's focus on diversity and inclusion is well recognized," he said, "but we didn't have a space dedicated as a DEI hub. The Intersection will be used exclusively for events related to DEI."
