University of South Carolina Aiken Celebrates Shakespeare's Birthday on April 19

Aiken, SC (04/06/2023) — A a series of campus events celebrating William Shakespeare's 459th birthday will be held at the University of South Carolina Aiken on Wed., April 19, for university and Aiken County high school students. The event is hosted by USC Aiken's Shakespeare Birthday Party Planning Committee.

The events begin at 10 a.m. on the Etheredge Center's main stage with an introduction by USC Aiken theater faculty, followed by a student performance of a scene from Shakespeare's most famous play, "Hamlet." Other events throughout the day include:

Dr. Katie Kalpin Smith, professor of English at USC Aiken, said, "This rich connection of academic interests is true of Shakespeare Studies in general and it is also indicative of the collaborative and supportive relationships USC Aiken professors have with each other and the campus."

The April 19 Shakespeare's Birthday Party Celebration is the culmination of a semester-long initiative to foster interdisciplinary learning among college and high school students.

The USC Aiken Shakespeare Birthday Party Planning Committee is devoted to promoting and celebrating the works of William Shakespeare and utilizing them as a focal point for interdisciplinary study and collaboration.

English faculty member and event organizer Roy Seeger, said, "We hope this day of events is not only a fun way to celebrate one of the greatest authors in the English language, but to show students the importance of the humanities in making sense of our daily lives."

USC Aiken students can attend the 10 a.m. performance for ICE Credit as well as participate in the day-long series of events.
