University of South Carolina Aiken Professor Wins the 2021 Capstone International Nursing Book Award
Aiken, SC (08/17/2021) — Katie A. Chargualaf, associate professor in the School of Nursing at the University of South Carolina Aiken (UofSC Aiken), is the 2021 recipient of the Capstone International Nursing Book Award, recognizing the excellence of an outstanding book published by nurses.
The book "Veteran-Centered Care in Education and Practice: An Essential Guide for Nursing Faculty" was co-edited by Chargualaf, Brenda Elliott, and Barbara Patterson. Published by Springer Publishing, an award-winning publisher of healthcare and behavior sciences content, the book "addresses the mandate to improve veteran healthcare as a national priority, highlighting the tremendous impact nurses can make on improving veteran health."
The book's abstract states:
"The care of military service members, veterans, and their families is a national public health concern, and as nurses, we have a duty to provide care to this population in a culturally sensitive manner. Military service members, veterans, and their families deserve culturally sensitive patient-centered care. This book undertakes to honor the sacrifices of our military and veteran populations and to provide all nurse educators one comprehensive resource they can turn for ideas and suggestions incorporating care of these individuals into the courses they teach and the clinical experiences of students and practicing nurses. It not only addresses what every nurse should know about military culture and the unique healthcare needs of this population but also what and how to teach the content and engage student veterans in the classroom."
Katie A. Chargualaf, Ph.D., RN, CMSRN, received her diploma in nursing from Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing, BSN from South Dakota State University, MSN from the University of Phoenix, and Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Chargualaf has experience teaching in accelerated and traditional baccalaureate nursing programs in all formats. Her research programs are related to veterans, military nurses, transition to practice, nurse retention, evidence-based practice, and post-transplantation patient outcomes.
