UofSC Aiken Announces Distinguished Citizen of the Year

Aiken, SC (12/28/2020) — The University of South Carolina Aiken recently selected Dr. Liz Stewart as its 2020 Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

In the award announcement, Vice Chancellor for Advancement and External Affairs Mary Driscoll said, "Dr. Liz Stewart has been a friend and donor of the university for many years, and we are proud to congratulate her on this most recent honor."

Stewart is the university's School of Business Administration Executive-in-Residence for the second year and has been instrumental in developing the Entrepreneur Center.

Stewart is the president of Stewart and Associates, Inc., a management, training, and survey-consulting firm that focuses on helping organizations function more effectively. The firm's specialties are human resource management, customized assessments and surveys, management and leadership development, executive coaching, and support for organizational development such as mergers, downsizing, and succession planning. Stewart's firm has celebrated 36 years in business with 205 employees in seven offices throughout the country.

During fifteen years with XEROX Corporation, Stewart served as a sales representative, sales manager, and, ultimately, the first female vice president. In addition to undergraduate degrees in French, Spanish, and education, Stewart earned a Master's degree in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Economics, as well as a law degree.

Stewart is extremely active in her community. Throughout her career, she has served on more than 80 boards and commissions the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Hitchcock Healthcare, SafeHomes of Augusta, St. Mary's Parish Council, and the City of Aiken Planning Commission. As a Rotarian, Stewart served as club president and District Assistant Governor. She currently serves on the boards of International Society of Economists, Rural Health Care Services, Aiken Technical College Foundation, Child Advocacy Center, Aiken Symphony Orchestra, Girl Scouts of SC, and St. Mary's School Council. She is a member of the Aiken County Planning Commission.

In 2013, she was the first executive-in-residence, and the following year she received the Distinguished Partner award, both through the School of Business.

She is the past Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year and a new member of the Aiken Partnership Board at UofSC Aiken.
