USC Aiken Profs Perform in Columbia at TEDxUofSC

Aiken, SC (10/08/2018) — University of South Carolina Aiken professors will take part in TEDxUofSC, a half-day experience that will include 12 short TEDx talks and artistic performances, Oct. 9, noon - 5:30 p.m., in the USC Alumni Center in Columbia.

Professors Dewey Scott-Wiley and Lauren Meccia from USC Aiken's Visual and Performing Arts Department will perform in this "atmosphere of innovation, connection and inspiration," which promises attendees an "immersive, dynamic afternoon."

According to USC's TEDx website, the event includes two creative works. The first, "Misery is Optional: Recollections of Recovery," is a theatrical piece that shines a light on a disease that affects 23 million Americans. Scott-Wiley, professor of theatre at USC Aiken, and professional actor Christine Hellman perform.

"We will be doing pieces from the full length play, "Misery is Optional: Recollections of Recovery," that we built last year from over 40 verbatim interviews with people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction," Scott-Wiley said.

Also, David Cutler of the University of South Carolina's School of Music has gathered a cadre of musicians from the university and the greater community to share a new take on Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major. This performance features Meccia on tenor saxophone.
