USC Aiken Recognizes Outstanding Senior Student

Aiken, SC (05/08/2023) — The University of South Carolina Aiken presented Elizabeth Nicole Basile, a senior middle level education major, the Outstanding Senior Student Award as part of its annual Academic Honors Ceremony on May 2.

Each May, the university recognizes students who have excelled academically in all disciplines. One student is chosen by faculty as the standout senior.

As an undergraduate, Basile has published and presented research at state, national and international middle level education conferences, including co-presenting a session at the European League for Middle Level Education Annual Conference in Portugal on innovation in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, she has presented at multiple annual conferences hosted by the South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education on topics such as energizing the mathematics classroom with cross-disciplinary connections. She also has been published in the association's journal on the topic, "Connecting Weirdness and Wonder to Mathematics in Middle School."

Basile has played an active role in professional organizations, serving as president of USC Aiken's Psi Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an education honors society; and collegiate board member for the South Carolina Association of Middle Level Education.

She has been recognized as the National Association of Professors of Middle Level Education's 2022 Outstanding Middle Level Teacher Education Candidate of the Year.

Basile is a South Carolina Life Scholar and Teaching Fellow; a volunteer with Great Oak Equine Assistant Programs and the Special Olympics; a math tutor and teacher assistant at USC Aiken; and a graduate of USC Aiken's Leadership Certificate Program.

She graduated as part of the Class of 2023 in USC Aiken's Commencement exercises on May 3.
