Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, inducted 14 new members at the University of South Carolina Aiken, just before graduation.

This year is a big one for the University of South Carolina Aiken Department of Communication as it celebrates two decades of offering a communication degree, and its 600th graduate received a diploma during commencement May 8. Additionally, some members of the Class of 2019 were among the 13 recently inducted into the Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society.

As part of its spring commencement activities, the University of South Carolina Aiken awarded several graduate degrees in three areas of study: Master of Business Administration, Master of Education in Educational Technology, and Master of Science in Applied Clinical Psychology.

The University of South Carolina Aiken presented Allison Swiecki, a biology major in the Class of 2019, the Outstanding Senior Student Award, during its annual Academic Honors ceremony, the night before graduation.

Participants began the session by sharing how they show respect and how respect has been shown to them in social and personal settings. Keeping that engagement in mind, we then learned about the Andover Bread Loaf Family Literacy Night Model. Following a review of the FLN rules, grounded in the work of Paulo Freire, students completed a family literacy night session. After completing the family literacy night writing prompts, open mic, and blues listening session, students dialogued about how family literacy night supports antibias education and creates emotionally and socially safe spaces in schools for young people. Students further discussed how family literacy night can be used as a transformative practice to disrupt bias, prejudice, and racism in school settings. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Lillian Reeves and attended by Dr. LeNessa Clark, Dr. Deborah McMurtrie, and Dr. Judy Collazo.

Student leaders from the University of South Carolina Aiken traveled to Orlando, Fla., for spring break, but they spent their time there goofing off - in a therapeutic way.

University of South Carolina Aiken alumna, Kimberly Kanagy, Class of '10, presents a scholarship check to Dr. Mick Fekula, dean of the USC Aiken School of Business Administration. Kanagy, a longtime supporter of her alma mater, is a financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial. A current student in the school of business will receive the Kimberly Kanagy Scholarship for Business.
