Artist Lisa Rivers at the Etherredge Center

Exhibit concludes the Carolina Series at the Etherredge Center

Aiken, SC (01/24/2023) — The Etherredge Center will host an opening reception for "Southern & Gullah Collection," an exhibit of art by Lisa Rivers, on Friday, February 10, at 6:00 pm. in the Etherredge Center. Wine and appetizers will be served, and Lisa Rivers will give a presentation about her paintings. This reception is the final event of the 2022-2023 Carolina Series that highlights artists from around the state. This year's theme was Gullah culture, bringing the low country's gospel songs, stories, and now Lisa River's vibrant familial art to Aiken.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Every artist was once an amateur." Beaufort-based artist Lisa Rivers seems to defy this statement because although her art career did not begin until she was fifty-two, her natural talent suggests that she has been painting professionally for decades. She describes her paintings as "stories of yesterday and today," stroked with strong emotions of love and pain. Rivers uses multiple mediums, including acrylic, oil, collage, and textile, incorporating vibrant colors in each piece. She is also the proud owner of Legacy Art Gallery, the only black woman-owned Southern Folk and Gullah art gallery in Beaufort, SC. She has been featured in Pink magazine, Southern Living, Lowcountry Weekly and was voted LOCAL Life magazine's "Local Artist of the Year" in 2021.

Her artwork has been displayed for several years at the annual Hilton Head Gullah Celebration, along with shows at the Beaufort Art Council, York W. Bailey Museum at Penn Center, and many more locations.

The opening reception for Lisa Rivers' exhibit will be held on Friday, February 10, at 6:00 pm at the Etherredge Center. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in person at the Etherredge Center box office, by calling (803) 641-3305, or online at www.etherredgecenter.universitytickets.com. The exhibit runs through March 15.
