Award-Winning Author Visits with University, Local Community

Aiken, SC (02/08/2018) — Jerry Craven, the award-winning author of more than two dozen books including poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction, met with University of South Carolina Aiken students and community members during a special visit to the area.

Currently, he is the director of Lamar University Press.

While on campus, Craven led a discussion with members of the Academy for Lifelong Learning and with students in Dr. Drew Geyer's Fiction Workshop class. In addition to the process of creative writing -- offering tips, techniques, and sources of inspiration - Craven discussed his most recent book, Parallel Hours, with the campus audiences.

"Parallel Hours, a book I wrote with Andrew Geyer, is a time-travel novel featuring three people who escape the Soviet invasion of Baku in 1990 by using a time window that strands them in 1221, right before the Mongol invasion of the city," Craven said on his website.

Geyer is currently the chair of the English Department at USC Aiken.

While on campus, Craven also met with Dr. Doug Higbee, USC Aiken English professor and editor of The Oswald Review. The authors explored the option of adding a print-on-demand element to the journal's current all-digital publication format.

Finally, the USC Aiken English Department hosted a reading by Craven, which was free and open to the public in the university's downtown space in the Alley.
