Beech Island Native Named Student of Month

Aiken, SC (10/27/2018) — The Sunrise Rotary Club of Aiken has named University of South Carolina Aiken senior, Lindsey Calhoun, as its Student of the Month for October.

Calhoun is an early childhood education major who hopes to work for an organization that focuses on children's advocacy.

"I want to close discrepancies and gaps in education having to do with socioeconomic status and/or race," she said.

While she ultimately wants to get a master's degree in social work, Calhoun currently stays active on campus as an IMPACT coordinator on campus, planning community service projects; participating in the university's leadership and honor programs; and serves as a teaching fellow.

This summer, she worked as an intern with the Children's Defense Fund in Washington, D.C., and with Baltimore Junior Academy Freedom Schools.

Calhoun credits USC Aiken with opening doors for her.

"I like the feel of a small school where I can get to know my professors. I don't feel lost in a sea of students," she said.

"There is more of an opportunity to shine."

In addition to Sunrise Rotary, others have recognized her potential too.

The South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children presented Calhoun with the Felicia Smalls Ragland Award.

When not shining in the classroom or with students, Calhoun volunteers to paint nails Cumberland Village, explores new coffee shops, spends time with her eight sisters and watches Grey's Anatomy.
