Esports Team Competes in PBC's First Tourney
Aiken, SC (03/30/2018) — The University of South Carolina Aiken's Esports team competed in the Peach Belt Conference's inaugural League of Legends championship earlier this month.
The PBC and Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends, partnered together to establish the multi-player video game competition, which marks a first for the NCAA. In fact, the Peach Belt is the first NCAA conference to participate in the College League of Legends season.
"USC Aiken is proud to be part of this cutting-edge effort to engage our students and offer diverse experiences," said team advisor Ross Philbeck.
While the Pacers practiced a lot prior to the tournament, they didn't make it to the final round.
"All in all it was a great first event, and I really think that esports in the Peachbelt has a lot of potential to go far," said team captain Tyrus Carlton.
"We had a good time regardless of the loss."
Carlton feels good about the team's first season. The gaming Pacers went 6-3 and finished fourth overall.
Currently, there are 10 students on the USC Aiken team, but only five compete at any given time during games. Match winners are determined by the best two out of three games. Each game may last 30 minutes to more than an hour.
