Julius Caesar at the Etherredge Center

For Immediate Release

Aiken, SC (12/14/2022) — Prepare for a journey into a world of conspiracy and betrayal in Shakespeare's tense political thriller, Julius Caesar.

The Etherredge Center presents its next Cultural Series event: William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar on January 14 at 7:30 p.m. The New York City-based Aquila Theatre Company will perform the play under the direction of artistic director Desiree Sanchez.

The story: fresh from success on the battlefield, a triumphant Caesar returns to Rome as a virtual dictator. Brutus, Cassius, and a group of like-minded senators decide that they must stop Caesar's ambitious power grab. The great Caesar must be assassinated. After the act has been carried out, violence erupts, and the country is plunged into civil war. The conspirators must contend with forces still loyal to the murdered leader, led by Mark Antony and Caesar's nephew Octavius. Aquila Theatre will breathe new fire and fury into this timeless tale, with The New Yorker describing their productions as "the classics made relevant with superb acting and clever staging."

Aquila Theatre Company was founded in London by Peter Meineck in 1991 with a production of Aeschylus's Agamemnon at the Bridge Lane Theatre before touring in the United States. The company then moved to New York City in 1994, becoming an established part of the theater scene with its productions of Iliad: Book One at the Clark Studio at Lincoln Center, followed by long-running Off-Broadway productions of Comedy of Errors and Much Ado About Nothing. Aquila Theatre has built up an extensive international touring circuit and educational programs to enhance the plurality of the audience's perspectives. Aquila has performed at the White House, the US Supreme Court, and in many international countries such as Greece, Italy, and Germany. While touring, they regularly offer students workshops and run a drama program specifically for New York-based teens from immigrant and refugee families.

Tickets for Julius Caesar are $25 to $50 for adults, along with discounts for seniors and young professionals. Purchase tickets by visiting the Etherredge Center box office, calling (803) 641-3305, or visiting www.etherredgecenter.universitytickets.com.
