Local Students Honored for Writing and Artistic Talents During Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration
Aiken, SC (01/24/2021) — The University of South Carolina Aiken, in partnership with Aiken Technical College, Aiken County Public Schools, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Celebration Steering Committee are pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Essay and Creative Visual Posters contests.
Winners of this year's contests were selected by representatives of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Celebration Steering Committee. Contest winners were recognized during the virtual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration on Sunday.
The keynote speaker for the event was Benedict College President Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, who will spoke on Dr. King's quote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," the theme for the 2021 event.
Kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Aiken County participated in the creative visual poster contest. Their original designs represented what the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday means to them.
The winning entry for the kindergarten to second grade category was submitted by the following students:
- First place: Kynslyn Bryant, South Aiken Baptist Christian School
- Second place: Bailee Butler, Mossy Creek Elementary School
- Third place: Arcadius Deer, Mossy Creek Elementary School
Winning entries for the third to fifth grade category were submitted by the following students:
- First place: Donovan Juarez, Mossy Creek Elementary School
- Second place: Izak Gore, Oakwood Winsor Elementary School
- Third place: Olive Anco, Chukker Creek Elementary
Winning entries for Middle School were submitted by the following students:
- First place: Margaret Clifford, Schofield Middle School
- Second place: Caroline Johnston, Mead Hall
- Third place: Maia Washburn, Aiken Intermediate School
Winning entries for High School were submitted by the following students:
- First place: Kimberly Morris, Aiken High School
- Second place: Kaitny Stroman, Aiken High School
- Third place: Gray Crews, North Augusta High School
