Aiken, SC (03/04/2019) — The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center announced the recipient of its annual award Spirit of Ruth Patrick Award

April Layfield, a 4th grade teacher at Millbrook Elementary School earned the annual award.

"This award recognizes a teacher in the CSRA who demonstrates a passion for teaching and infusing a love of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics," said Dr. Gary Senn, director of the RPSEC.

Dr. Ruth Patrick -- the namesake for both the award and the science education center on the University of South Carolina Aiken campus - was a world-renowned scientist. She developed a way to test the water quality of the Savannah River while the Savannah River Site was being built in the early 1950s.
