Piano Recital Features USC Aiken Faculty Member
Aiken, SC (09/19/2018) — The University of South Carolina Aiken's Faculty Artist Recital Series kicks off Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m., on the Etherredge Center Main Stage.
"The Faculty Artist Recital series highlights the music faculty at our university," said Dr. Joel Scraper, chair of the visual and performing arts department.
"We are fortunate to have a diverse and exceptional faculty who are not only committed artists but dedicated teachers. These recitals allow us to showcase our faculty's abilities."
The free event, sponsored by USC Aiken's Department of Visual and Performing Arts, is open to the public and features faculty member Dr. Anna Hamilton who will perform an eclectic selection.
Hamilton received both her Doctorate of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in piano pedagogy from the University of South Carolina. She is a native of Michigan where she received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy Certification from Grand Valley State University. She studied piano with Aviram Reichert and Charles Fugo, and piano pedagogy with Helen Marlais and Scott Price.
"I have the privilege to work with Dr. Hamilton collaboratively," Scraper said. "She is a sensitive pianist and the repertoire in this program highlights her musical strengths."
She has maintained an active piano studio in Columbia, S.C., for more than a decade, providing lessons to students of diverse ages and levels. Hamilton serves as the music coordinator for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia. She is active as a solo and collaborative pianist, teacher, adjudicator, and presenter and has served as chair for the SCMTA State Auditions (2013-2017) and the CMTA Celebration of Musical Achievements Festival.
Hamilton has published articles in Clavier Companion and Piano Pedagogy Forum. She has given recent presentations at the local and state level, as well as the Music Teachers National Association Conference and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. Her areas of special interest include community engagement and outreach in piano education, and she began and has continued a program for piano lesson study in a state correctional institution since 2012.
