USC Aiken Freshmen Take Part in First Academic Ceremony
Aiken, SC (08/22/2019) — As part of the University of South Carolina Aiken's annual Freshman Convocation, approximately 600 incoming students participated in the traditional Pacer Bridge crossing.
Members of the Class of 2023 followed Dr. Mark Hollingsworth, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences led the processional while playing the bagpipes. The top two students -- Kayla Hutto and Adam Kimsey -- carried the Class of 2023 banner, followed by Dr. Sandra Jordan, chancellor; Dr. Daren Timmons, provost; and Student Government Association President Q'Ladrin Qourters.
Once on the other side, they attended their first academic ceremony in the USC Aiken Convocation Center. Renee Watson, author of Piecing Me Together, was the guest speaker. Her book was the summer reading for the freshmen. The required reading is part of the university's critical inquiry class.
"The process of discovery is an important one, one that is anchored in critical thought, which is why we require each freshman to take the critical inquiry class," said Dr. Daren Timmons, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.
During the class, students will hone their critical thinking skills: reasoning, evaluating, problem solving, decision making, analyzing, and articulating positions.
"These skills will be the very ones employers will want on their teams, communities will need from responsible, engaged citizens in their neighborhoods, and children must have from caring families as they face life's challenges and enjoy life's blessings," Timmons said.
"Our faculty are eager to guide you through this incredible intellectual journey you're beginning today."
Classes for all Pacers start Aug. 22.
