USC Aiken Hosts Composer's Guild Concert

Aiken, SC (02/21/2019) — The Aiken Composer's Guild will host its second concert, this one featuring an international composer, March 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the Etherredge Center on the University of South Carolina Aiken campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Professor Lu Yang from China will play a piece he composed for the xun, a clay, Chinese flute. In addition to his own scores, Yang will perform works composed by his father. The visiting composer is a friend of Nai Tse Tsai, a member of the Aiken Composers Guild, which was founded by members of the USC Aiken faculty.

The concert will also feature the Aiken Sheriff's Pipes and Drums, playing Roper Mountain, an original score composed by David Culp. He is a member of both the pipe and drum corps and the guild.

Other works on the program include music for piano and voice by Dr. Richard Maltz, USC Aiken music professor emeritus; a clarinet composition by Dr. Mark Hollingsworth, the dean of the USC Aiken College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; and electronic music by JR. Hall, a professor at USC Aiken.

Maltz and Hollingsworth formed the Aiken Composer's Guild last fall, which is open to members of the public as well as USC Aiken students, faculty and staff. Hall is currently composing music in a variety of genres, ranging from classical and experimental to hip-hop, electronic dance music, pop, and rock. He released two full-length albums in the past year.

The Aiken Composer's Guild concert March 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the Etherredge Center, is free and open to the public.
