USC Aiken Leaders Found a New WAY2UNITE

Aiken, SC (11/03/2017) — The University of South Carolina Aiken Student Government Association has partnered with university and local leaders to raise money for the annual United Way campaign.

"The month of November is a time for giving thanks. Also, during this special month, it is a time to think about others who are less fortunate and do not have all that we have been blessed with. With this in mind, the Student Government Association decided what better way to display the true meaning of the holiday season then to give back to our community," said Jacob Yarbrough, SGA president.

"As a governing body, it is important not only to represent the students of USCA but the surrounding community as well. With this initiative, we hope to bring a smile to the faces of those in need."

To that end, SGA is encouraging every member of the student body to donate at least $2 to its Way2Unite campaign, which runs through Nov. 30. Contributions can be dropped off in the SGA office.

"Students don't have a lot of money, but we should be able to swing a couple of bucks a piece. That's cheaper than many selections at Starbucks, so if Pacers gave up one cup of coffee this month, we'd meet our goal," Yarbrough said.

Although the goal is to raise $2 per student, SGA upped the ante a bit, challenging student organizations - and individuals - in a friendly competition. The organization raising the most money for the United Way will earn a pizza party. The individual raising the most money will get some Downtown Dollars to spend Downtown Aiken, just in time for the holidays. Individuals and student organizations can be creative in their fundraising efforts.

SGA will have a Way2Unite leaderboard on its office window in the heart of the Student Activities Center. It will be updated frequently and will list the leading organizations and individuals.

"While our goal is simply $2 from each student, as an incentive, we thought we would raise the stakes -- both for the United Way and for some campus-wide fun - by adding a spirited competition and the leaderboard," Yarbrough said.
