USC Aiken Student Receives Rotary Award

Aiken, SC (02/02/2019) — The Aiken Sunrise Rotary Club named University of South Carolina Aiken psychology major, Nikia Franklin, its Student of the Month for January 2019.

The Columbia, S.C., native is also minoring in women and gender studies. Ultimately, Franklin hopes to earn her doctorate degree.

"My professional goal is to become an African-American studies professor with a focus in psychology," she said.

Franklin, who attended W.J. Keenan High School, graduates from USC Aiken in May.

During her time on campus, she has been involved as a student leader and in a variety of organizations.

"I chose [USC Aiken] because of its close, family atmosphere and its numerous opportunities for me to grow as a student and leader," Franklin said.

"I saw the university as a place to establish my roots and become the best version of myself. At the university, I have been able to unlock my full potential and motivate others to do the same."

She has served as a resident mentor for the USC Aiken Housing Department, as a diversity team leader for student life, in the USC Aiken student chapter of the NAACP, as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and as secretary for the Mu Lambda chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

She is often active in community service projects and has earned financial assistance from the USC Aiken Diversity Initiatives Program Fund and the Millham Memorial Scholarship.
