USC Aiken Students Attend Carolina Undergraduate Social Science Symposium

Aiken, SC (04/26/2022) — On Friday, April 22, four University of South Carolina Aiken (USC Aiken) students, Olivia Cannady, Idasha O'Berry, Javonne Richardson, and Jamiah Smalls, from Dr. Melencia Johnson's Girls' Delinquency seminar, presented their literature reviews on topics related to girls' delinquency at the Carolina Undergraduate Social Science Symposium at Allen University in Columbia.

Johnson, an associate professor in the Sociology Department, is the 2022 USC Aiken Excellence in Teaching awardee.

Richardson, a senior psychology major, was awarded the second-place prize in the Best Presentation competition for her literature review titled, "The Differential Enforcement of Zero Tolerance Policies Among Black and White Girls."

Smalls, a senior sociology major, said of the experience, "This was my first time traveling to a sociology conference. I'm glad I chose to attend and present my paper and hope to be able to present at another conference next semester."
