USC Aiken to Take Part in Interfaith Harmony Month

Aiken, SC (12/20/2019) — University of South Carolina Aiken faculty, staff and students will take part in Interfaith Harmony Month, beginning with an event Dec. 30, at 11 a.m., in the City Council Chamber in the Aiken Municipal Building, located at 214 Park Ave., SW.

Dr. Sandra Jordan, chancellor, will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the first event, during which Mayor Rick Osbon will read a proclamation, launching the month-long observance.

Throughout January, activities will take place all over the community, including three events at USC Aiken:

Lecture: 500 Years of Islam in American

  • Jan. 15, 4 p.m.
  • USC Aiken Student Activities Center, SAC MEZZ

George Clare, a member of the Islamic Society of Augusta and Aiken Interfaith Partners, will share insights related to Islam, including: history, geography, sociology, architecture and more.

Lecture: Memoirs of a Holocaust Survivor: Judith's story

  • Jan. 21, 4:30 p.m.
  • USC Aiken Student Activities Center, SAC MEZZ

Aiken resident, Judith Evans, will share her emotionally powerful story of survival during one of the world's worst genocides in history. While sharing her Holocaust experiences, she will describe themes of love, fear and hope.

Panel: Building Bridges: Interfaith Conversations

  • Jan. 30, 4:30 p.m.
  • USC Aiken Student Activities Center, SAC MEZZ

Religious leaders from Sikhism, Christianity, and Islam will engage each other on their faith's views on modern topics, chosen by USC Aiken students, including: the afterlife, homosexuality and common misconceptions about each representative's faith.

Panelists include:

  • Imam Jawal Rasul, Islamic Society of Augusta
  • Rev. Paul Bush, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church
  • Narinder Singh Malik, Guru Singh Sabha Augusta

All events are free and open to the public.
